Draw confirms FIFA World Cup™ intercontinental play-off pairings
- Play-offs to be single-legged and to be played in June 2022
- Qatar confirmed as neutral venue
Held today at the Home of FIFA, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ intercontinental play-off draw has determined the confederation pairings in the contest for the last two spots at football’s flagship global event.
The pairings to be decided as a single leg are:
AFC Team v. CONMEBOL Team
Concacaf Team v. OFC Team
With the aim of continuing to test operations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022, FIFA has confirmed Qatar as the neutral venue for the intercontinental play-off matches, which will be played at one of the tournament venues featuring the country’s innovative cooling system on 13 and 14 June 2022.
The play-offs were originally scheduled to take place in March 2022 but were rescheduled to June 2022 as a result of the unprecedented disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to the scheduling of FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers globally.
Four years ago, Australia and Peru secured passage to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ via the intercontinental play-offs with wins over Honduras and New Zealand respectively.
