To connect with nature during the Durga Puja, head towards the Vedic Village Spa Resort!

By Arundhati Gupta

It is like an oasis amidst a congested semi-urban setting—a perfect getaway to revitalise a tired body and mind.  About forty five-minute drive from the heart of south Kolkata, the Vedic Village Spa Resort in Shikharpur, is spread across 150 acres of unspoilt land, dotted with small water bodies. Here nature can be enjoyed in its naked beauty with unique flora and fauna making it a delightful place for nature lovers. The aesthetically designed resort structures blend perfectly with the natural surroundings. How prettily it nestles amidst sylvan surroundings! Migratory birds find it peaceful to make Vedic Village their temporary nesting place. Here, emphasis is on consumption of nature in a luxurious resort setting that brilliantly combines contemporary living facilities with traditional ‘wellness’ activities. Situated in a landscape where Rajarhat’s New Town dominates, Vedic Village manages to retain its own individuality.

The Lake View Villas and the Earth Villas are the central attractions for the guests. The Earth Villas are so uniquely different with their architectural elements borrowing heavily from the mud huts of the santhals of Birbhum.  Mud plasters, trussed grass and other sustainable materials have been used to create these beautiful villas. Tribal wall relief work, exquisite terracotta sculptures, patachitras and hand crafted wooden furniture add to the entire rustic effect. Skilled artisans from various parts of Bengal have richly contributed in making it artistically beautiful. These row villas offer an unadulterated view of the mini lake and its surrounding natural beauty. While designing the resort, focus was on the existing water bodies and developing an interconnected system between open spaces and ponds to facilitate natural drainage.

There are a total of eighteen Lake Villas and nine Earth Villas skirting the lake. Though architecturally different, with the Lake Villas designed on the lines of resorts in Bali, the two types of Villas seem to complement each other. Elegantly furnished, each villa offers 5-star comfort with all amenities matching any international resort of this kind. And, if you want to say your morning prayers, head towards the terracotta temple. The design is a miniature copy of a Bishnupur temple. It is a very peaceful spot, just right for meditation!

Besides the Villas there are various types of accommodation…Bungalows, Aqua Bungalows with individual terrace pools and rooms for the differently-abled. The resort caters to all age groups and contains within its area an award-winning restaurant Bhoomi, serving delectable Bengali cuisine. There’s also Agnee, the classic sit-down bar and a multi-cuisine restaurant, Chai—the lounge where you can relax and sip your evening tea with jhal muri for accompaniment and another F&B outlet—Yagna, offering an all-day dining experience. The Pool Bistro offers finger food, sandwiches and burgers plus roasts and grills.

Rajib Roy Choudhury, Senior General Manager, Vedic Village Spa and Resort says, “There’s lots to do at the Vedic Village Spa Resort—outdoor pools, gymnasium, games room, the library, indoor games like carrom, chess, ludo are all available.  Outdoor activities like cycling, archery, angling, darts, Segway, paddle boating and pressure rockets are available to allow everyone to enjoy the open space!” This is not all…during winters, go horse trotting or be on the golf course in action! Forget not to relax at the Sanjeeva Spa and avail their traditional ayurvedic treatment and massages under expert guidance!
