16 teams to take part in 130th Edition of Iconic Durand Cup, tournament starts from Sep 5 to Oct 3 across Kolkata
The prestigious Durand Cup is all set to make a grand comeback this year, in the football loving state of West Bengal.
Five Indian Super League (ISL) franchises and three I-League teams will be among 16-teams vying for the iconic Durand Cup Football Tournament, to be played in and around Kolkata between September 5 to October 3, 2021. The tournament, now in its 130th edition was first held in the Mecca of Indian football back in 2019, after moving from its long time venue at Delhi , the national capital of India.
Traditionally organized by the Indian Army on behalf of Indian Armed Forces, the World’s third oldest and Asia’s oldest football tournament will this year also see the Government of West Bengal as joint hosts, who have been providing support in all aspects of organization.
Besides top ISL franchises FC Goa and Bengaluru FC, the other clubs from India’s top division would be Kerala Blasters, Jamshedpur FC and Hyderabad FC.
Challenging them would be the century old Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkata, who were the first Indian winners of the Cup in 1940 and who would be leading a troika of I-League challengers including defending champions Gokulam Kerala and Sudeva FC of Delhi.
FC Bengaluru United and Delhi FC will represent the second division of Indian football whereas two Indian Army teams (Red and Green), a team from Indian Air Force and Indian Navy, CRPF and the Assam Rifles round-off the 16.
Three leading footballing venues of the State have been identified for the 130th Durand Cup, namely the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) and the Mohun Bagan Club Ground in Kolkata as well as the Kalyani Municipal Stadium Ground, which has been regularly hosting national level football matches over the past few years.
The Durand Cup is unique in the sense the winners are awarded three trophies with two rolling ones (the Durand Cup and the Shimla Trophy) and the President’s Cup for permanent keeping.
A symbol of India’s football history and culture, the Durand Cup is Asia’s oldest and the world’s third oldest football tournament, held between 16 top Indian football clubs across divisions. Organized by the Indian Armed Forces, the Durand Cup has been the breeding ground for India’s best footballing talent, over the years.
The inaugural edition happened in Shimla in 1888, when it started off as an Army Cup, open only to the British Indian Army troops in India, but soon opened up to civilian teams. Named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand, Foreign Secretary of British India from 1884 to 1894, the iconic tournament reached its 130th edition in 2021. MohunBagan and East Bengal have been the most successful teams, winning the tournament 16 times each.
Indian Armed forces are the major contributors towards the field of sports in India for a long time.
Services Sports Control Board is one of the best sports control boards of India. But they are lacking in fund .If they would have got adequate funds like BCCI , I am sure they would have produced many more world class sports persons and could improve the rank of India at least within first ten rankings in the World sports.
The Indian Army have always protected more than 135 Crore people of our Motherland by guarding the International borders with their selfless sacrifice and dedication and have played a very prominent role in the field of sports helping the country in producing some of the best athletes on the global stage. The performance of the gold medal winner , JCO Neeraj Chopra (VSM) in the Tokyo Olympic is a glaring example !
