30th June is observed as World Social Media Day. The day is celebrated to recognise social media’s impact on global communication and for bringing the world together. Social media has not only given people a free platform to express their views, but it also connects people from all over the world, crossing all geographical boundaries. And it has taken communication to a new level. Social Media day is celebrated to thank Social Media platforms for their role in shaping our society.

While social media has impacted the Global communication, it has played a major role during Pandemic. Since last year, the country is reeling under lockdown, ‘social media’ has revealed itself as one of the source of happiness in this period. People remained connected with friends and family through social media; watched funny memes and videos, and attended Instagram Live concerts; explored their creative side by making content for social media; and learnt new skills such as cooking, painting, etc. through DIY videos created by influencers.

‘The Little Things We Do’, the latest research from Godrej Group, analysed that:

  • 46.42% of respondents remained connected with friends and family through social media OR
  • 45.5% of male and 48.36% of female remained connected with friends and family through social media OR
  • More than 50% (51.01%) of respondents from the age group of 35-44 year old remained connected with friends and family through social media

During Pandemic it has been found that online media and social media is a key contributor for the information resource. Though it has been always an issue that quality of information passed some times fake propaganda and misleading in nature. This misuse of the platforms has affected the reputation and authenticity but still people like to use more social media and online media for the information over traditional media.

The pressure for social media and online media was such that Government of India tried to place a new rule for digital media. It is always good to have such regulation with in freedom of expression and national security in a measured way. Openness of social media and online media can not be a source of terror and miscreants arsenal for information war.

So, from IBG NEWS side we request all users, owners and promoters of Social Media to be a responsible citizen. Misusing of these platforms will force authorities to impose more strict guideline which will defeat the very essence of social media.

Citizen journalists and content creators should follow the journalistic ethics code to keep the moral of the Online Media high. A great new scope for job creation with online media will be lost, if exploitation continues at junior journalist level.

At the end we are proud to be the pioneer in the field of Online Media science 2004. Now the time has come to make it a big commercial success. All the best to all social media users and content creators.
