21 Nov, 2019, Kolkata: Amit Kumar Fan Club and Centrestage jointly presented a concert in fond memory of legendary actress, singer Ruma Guha Thakurta on her 85th birth anniversary at Uttam Mancha, yesterday.
Noted dancer Poly Guha performed with a song ” Nomi Nomi” rendered by Ruma’s daughter Sromona Chakraborty , followed by Calcutta youth Choir’s songs like ” Ganga ” ” Pothe Ebar Namo Sathi”, Kalyan Sen Barat and Calcutta Choir performed ” Dhitang Dhitang Bole”, Saikat Mitra sang “Ei Toh Hetay Kunja Chhayay” with Sromona from the film Lukochuri, Srikanta Acharya sang ” Tomar Amar Thikana”, Debamalya Chatterjee sang ” Dekho Dekho Shuktara Ankhi Mele Chay” from the film Nirjan Saikate, Avirup Guha Thakurta sang “Sukher Majhe Tomay Dekhechhi” from the film Jodi Jantem, Manomay Bhattacharya sang “Jakhon Bhanglo Milan Mela”, Sromona Chakraborty sang ” Jane Wale Sipahi Se Poochho” from the film Usne Kahan Tha composed by Salil Chowdhury .
Legendary actors like Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee, Debashree Roy, Lalita Ray, Chaitali Dasgupta, Sohag Sen, noted elocutionist Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee all graced the occasion with their august presence. Music for the entire concert was conducted by Rocket Mondal, while Debashish Basu anchored the same.
Ruma Guha Thakurta was born on 21 Nov 1934 in a Bramho family. Her mother Sati devi was also a singer. She made her debut as an actress when she was just ten with Jwar Bhata (1944) which was Dilip Kumar’s debut film.
She got married versatile artiste Kishore Kumar in 1951 and was blessed with a son Amit Kumar who is also a popular singer. Ruma got married to Arup Guha Thakurta in 1960 after Kishore and she got divorced in 1958. She moved to Kolkata and acted films like Ganga, Personal Assistant, Khaniker Atithi, Nirjan Saikate, Abhijaan, Palatak, Kinu Gowalar Goli,Ashite Asio Na, 36 Chowringee Lane, The Namesake and so on.
She worked with the filmmakers like Rajen Tarafdar, Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Tarun Majumder, Aparna Sen to name a few. She formed Calcutta Youth Choir in Kolkata inspired by Salil Chowdhury. She passed away on 3 June,2019.
