Police commissionerates coming up in Haldia & Kharagpur

The State Government has proposed to set up two more police commissionerates in Haldia and Kharagpur, in the districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur, respectively. With these two, the number of police commissionerates in Bengal is climb to eight.

After coming to power, following the orders of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the State Government has set up six police commissionerates – Howrah, Asansol-Durgapur, Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, Siliguri and Chandannagar. Chandannagar was last one to be formed till now.

A police commissionerate is a police administrative zone composed of a number of usually urban police stations, headed by a police commissioner.

Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate has the largest number of police stations under it, which is 20, followed by Barrackpore with 12, Chandannagar with 10, Bidhannagar with nine, Howrah with eight and Siliguri with five.
