20 women from ‘Below Poverty Line’ (BPL) families were handed over LPG connections by Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C) – Petroleum & Natural Gas, S S. Ahluwalia, Hon’ble Minister of State – Parliamentary Affairs, Agriculture and Farmer Welfare; Babul Supriyo – Hon’ble Minister of State, Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises; and Dilip Ghosh, Hon’ble MLA & State President BJP, West Bengal to mark provision of such connection to 5 crore BPL families in fiscal 2016-17 on occasion of launch of Pradhan Mantri UjjwalaYojana (PMUY).

Under the scheme assistance of 1600 INR to the woman beneficiary, comprising security deposit of 14.2 Kg cylinder and domestic pressure regulator; suraksha hose; domestic gas consumer card and installation charges will be provided.

Finance Minister has budgeted Rs. 2,000 Crore to provide assistance to 1.5 Crore LPG connections for BPL households during the financial year 2016-17.

PMUY is also targeting 10 Crore new LPG connections by 2019 to achieve blanket coverage. During next two financial years – 2017-18 and 2018-19, the GOI would make budgetary provision of Rs. 6000 Crore for 3.5 Crore new connections to BPL households.

Addressing the gathering Ahluwalia  said “GOI is going to invest around Rs. 3000 Crore in various projects in the state of West Bengal to augment the LPG supply system & enhance the employment availability by adding close to 10000 new jobs.”, adding that they are going to release 60 lakh new LPG connections in the coming 2 years.

This is the first time in the history of the country that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural gas is implementing a welfare scheme benefitting Crores of women belonging to the BPL households. The identification of BPL families will be made on Social Economic Caste Census (SECC)- 2011 data. Providing LPG connections to BPL households will ensure universal coverage of cooking gas in the country.

PMUY scheme was launched May 01, 2016 at Ballia (Uttar Pradesh) and subsequently to several regions in states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Odisha, Bihar, Haryana, Chattisgar

Within a short span of around 3 months, more than 33 Lac beneficiaries have been released LPG connections under the scheme throughout the country. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is set to extend benefit of the scheme to 1.5 Crore beneficiaries during the current financial year 2016-17.
