A devastating tornado, hail storms and heavy rain killed at least 78 people and injured more than 500 people in eastern China on Thursday, broken power lines, damaged cars and ripping roofs off houses in Jiangsu province of eastern China.
The storm struck arround mid-afternoon near Yancheng city, a few hours drive away north of China’s commercial capital, Shanghai, Ministry of Civil Affairs spokesperson said.
Gusty winds of 125 km per hour (78 mph) thrashed many townships in Funing county, the official Xinhua news agency of China said.
“I heard the gales and ran upstairs to shut the windows,” Funing resident Xie Litian, 62, told Xinhua.
Roughly around 500 hurt more than 200 have serious injuries. Power and communications are down in many locations and emergency supplies, including 1,000 tents, have been rushed to the scene, the civil affairs ministry said in a statement. Government agencies working hard to support people.
