5. PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS
Cargo Traffic:
During April-May 2016, KoPT handled 8.011 million tonnes (mt) of traffic. Kolkata Dock System (KDS) handled a cargo throughput of 2.677 mt in Apr-May’16 over 2.672 mt, in Apr-May’15, having a growth of 0.19%. On the other hand, Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) handled 5.334 mt in Apr-May’16.
KoPT registered growth in Apr-May’16 vis-a-vis Apr-May’15 in respect of Other Liquid Cargo, Manganese Ore, Other Ore, Fertiliser, Limestone, Other Coke, Fly Ash, Pulse, Container TEUs & Tonnage, Other Miscellaneous Cargo etc.
Growth was registered at KDS in Apr-May’16 for Other Liquid Cargo, Fertiliser, Fly Ash, Pulse,Container TEUs & Tonnage. At HDC, traffic increased in Apr-May’16 primarily for Vegetable Oil, Other Liquid Cargo, Manganese Ore, Other Ore, Limestone, Petroleum Coke, Other Coal/Coke, Fly Ash,Container (TEUs & Tonnage), and Other Miscellaneous Cargo etc.
Container Traffic:
KoPT handled 1,25,101 TEUs in Apr-May’16 vis-à-vis 96,326 TEUs in Apr-May’15, registering the highest growth of 29.87% among Indian Major Ports (against 4.27% growth registered by Major Ports). KoPT ranked 3rd amongst all Indian Major Ports in terms of Container traffic during Apr-May’16.
Comparative Performance:
KoPT ranked first in terms of quantum of Coking & Other Coal/Coke handling, second in Other Liquid Cargo handling amongst Indian Major Ports in Apr-May’16.
Ship Traffic:
In Apr-May’16, KoPT handled 564 ships – the highest among Indian Major Ports.
Railway Traffic:
During Apr-May’16, KoPT handled rail-borne traffic of 4.091 mt (KDS – 1.041 mt, HDC – 3.05 mt). At KDS, number of trains received and despatched was 450 and 367 respectively and at HDC, 638 trains were received and 647 were despatched in the period under review.
Major Achievements:
KoPT adjudged Container Port for the year 2015-16 by EXIM Group. Trophy & Certificate presented in award function on 6.5.16 at Kolkata.
During the course of the review meeting presided by Secretary(Shipping) on 12.5.2016,Kolkata Port has been awarded the 3rd position in terms of highest growth rate in traffic in 2015-16.

Goods for Tripura, started from Kolkata using inland waterways for Ashuganj port, then by road (32 kms) to Agartala. Opening up new avenues.

Shipping through Eden Channel resumed since 18.09.15 with two inward vessels M.V. Tina & M.V. Cape Kasos. Eden channel has become fully operational from 29.02.16 for movement of all ships to/ from Haldia. 684 vessels (337 inward; 347 outward) have passed through the channel in April-May’16.
KDS of KoPT handled an all time record monthly container throughput of 56,996 TEUs in May’16. Previous highest was 53,160 TEUs in Aug’15.
Record handling of 5,72,757 MTs by rail at KDS in May’16 (by 286 trains inward and outward). Previous highest handling was 5,15,765 MTs (258 trains) was in Jan’15
